The Biggest Opening in the House

Impact Sliding Glass Doors protect what is often the largest single pane of glass on a Miami Gardens home: the slider to the back patio, Florida room or pool. A 12-foot opening catches a lot of wind, and if it fails in a storm, it lets in both pressure and water. Older aluminum sliders also tend to have worn rollers, bent tracks and locks that barely catch.

Configurations

  • Two-panel (XO): one fixed panel and one that slides. The usual size for a standard patio opening.
  • Three-panel (XOX or OXX): wider openings, with one or two operating panels.
  • Four-panel (OXXO): the two center panels slide apart for a wide walkway.
  • Pocket sliders: panels slide into the wall, which needs a framed pocket and is usually part of a larger remodel.
  • Multi-track stacking: panels stack behind each other for a wider clear opening.

Why sliders need extra attention

The track is where most slider problems start. Water must drain out of the sill instead of into the house during wind-driven rain, so impact sliders use taller sill risers and weep systems. The heavier laminated panels need good rollers and a straight, level sill, which sometimes means grinding or patching the slab under the old track. We check that before quoting.

Design pressure and size

Big doors face big loads. The approval for each slider lists the largest panel size and the design pressure it was tested to, and those numbers fall as the panels get wider or taller. A slider that works on a sheltered back porch may not be approved for a wide opening on an exposed corner. We match your opening's required pressure to the product before ordering, and we tell you if a different panel layout is needed to stay within the approval.

Glass options

Laminated glass is required for the impact rating. From there you can add an insulated unit with an air space, a Low-E coating for west-facing patios that bake in the afternoon, a gray or bronze tint, or obscure glass where privacy matters. Aluminum frames are the most common for impact sliders in South Florida; vinyl is available for some products.

Is it time to replace yours?

  • The door is hard to slide or jumps the track
  • Water collects on the floor inside after storms
  • The lock does not hold the panel tight
  • The glass is ordinary tempered glass with no impact rating
  • Shutters for the slider are heavy and hard to install

What an Impact Slider Job Includes

Each slider quote breaks out the door, the opening work and the finish so nothing is hidden.

Opening and slab check

We measure the rough opening and check the slab for level, since a heavy impact slider needs a flat sill to roll well.

Old door removal

Panels, track and frame come out; the sill area is cleaned and patched if needed.

Approved slider assembly

Frame, panels, glass and hardware ordered as the tested unit in your chosen layout and finish.

Sill drainage and sealing

The sill is set and sealed so water drains outside, with weeps kept clear.

Locks and screens

Locks adjusted for a tight close; screen door fitted if the product includes one.

How an Impact Slider Job Works

1. Measure and check the slab

We measure the opening, check the floor for level and note any water damage at the old track.

2. Choose layout and glass

Panel layout, glass, tint and frame color are chosen within what the approval allows for your opening.

3. Permit and order

We file the permit and order the slider made to size.

4. Install and seal

The old slider comes out and the new one goes in and is sealed the same day.

5. Inspect and adjust

After the final inspection we adjust rollers and locks so the door slides and closes cleanly.

Impact Sliding Glass Doors Questions

Are impact sliding doors heavy to open?

The panels are heavier than ordinary glass, but good rollers on a level sill keep them easy to slide. If your old door was hard to move, the track or sill was often the cause, and we fix that during install.

Can I make my slider opening wider?

Possibly, but widening means cutting the wall and adding a header, which needs engineered drawings and a different permit than a straight replacement. We can tell you after seeing the wall whether it is practical.

Will an impact slider stop water during a storm?

Impact sliders are tested for water resistance as well as impact, and higher sill risers help. Very heavy wind-driven rain can still push some water into the track, which is designed to drain it back outside.

Can I keep my shutters for the slider instead?

Yes, if you prefer. An accordion or roll-down shutter over an existing slider is a lower-cost way to protect it, though someone has to close it before each storm.
